According to this Microsoft support document, the "Browse Version History" option is only available when you use their OneDrive backup solution. Not sure how accurate it is since the person asking is using a Mac and the answer pertains to the Windows version.

If not using OneDrive, do you use Time Machine for backups? You would be able to do the same using a Time Machine backup.

If not using any backup option, then reverting to a previous version may not be possible. Many apps now include version control of documents that does allow you to revert without using Time Machine. This seems to be supported by many Apple apps like TextEdit, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and more, but apparently Microsoft does not support it with Word. I don't have Word on my Mac now, but maybe someone else can verify if the feature works for them.

Found a possible solution:

Ensure that Time machine is enabled and that it is showing in your menu bar. Then right-click on the word document and open it using "TextEdit". Then once the file has opened on text edit click the time machine icon on your menu bar (top right) and select "Enter time machine". You should then be able to browse older versions of your word document regardless of whether you have the OneDrive backup enabled.

Hope this helps!

Sorry, I should have been more clear.

This is on MicroSoft WORD.

If I open an MS WORD document and go the the "file" menu selection,

There is a "Browse Version History" option, but it is greyed out.

Based on what I can find on the web, this is the option that I can use to recover an older version of a WORD document.

I'm guessing you're referring to Safari browsing history. Or Firefox as they are very similar.

If that's so, browser history is just a listing of where you've visited. There's nothing there to restore as either you can backup in history or you cannot. But even then, there's no assurance what you had typed on any given site will still be there. Usually in that case there's a panel that explains data must be "resent" but that is a cautionary panel. Data cannot always be replaced when backing up.
