ocating a Lost iPhone:

I. Use Find My: Use the Find My App to Locate a Missing Device or Item - Apple Support

If Find My was enabled with this, then you may be able to find it. Only the last location your iPhone was seen at would show up.

II. If Find My is Not an Option...

A. Backtrack your Locations:

Do it the olde fashioned way and backtrack your locations. For instance, if you were at a retail store, then stop in, asking the store manger if it was placed aside.

B. Lost-&-Found:

Chick with the Lost & Found department of the facility you were in, seeing if it has been handed over.

C. Contact Local Authorities:

See if the community police, or local security guards at the front door, can across it.

D. Use Craigslist:

Put a post on Craigslist, seeing if they have been found.

If you enabled the Find My option on the phone, but the phone is powered off......it might still appear for a day or two on the Find My map if there other iPhones close to the lost phone. This assumes that the battery has not run down on the lost phone.

In other words, when the phone is powered off, it will still send out an intermittent Bluetooth signal for a few days. If there are other iPhones within 50 feet or so, the phones might be able to pick up the signal from the phone that is "off".

If the battery has run down or the phone does not have a connection to the Internet, then it will not show up on the Find My map. You might see an "Offline" message....and you might not.

If it has been 3-4 days and the iPhone has not appeared on the Find My map, it is probably never going to appear.

Assuming the battery has not run down, when the phone is turned "off", it will still send out an intermittent Bluetooth signal that may be picked up by other iPhones in close proximity.

To confirm this feature.......power off your phone. Look at the text below the "off" slider.

It should say...."Phone Findable After Power Off" with recent iOS versions.

Let's forget about the ants and just say that you powered off the phone normally yesterday and Find My was enabled on the phone.

Assume that the phone had decent battery power when it was powered off.

You would simply use Find My the normal way, and if there is another iPhone (or iPhones) in close proximity to pick up the Bluetooth signal that is intermittently broadcast from the "lost" iPhone......(even if it is off)......the phone will appear on the Find My map normally.

You don't have to do anything special. Yes, at some point the battery will wind down to the point where the phone can't send out a signal. It all depends on how much charge was on the battery when the phone was powered off. It might go a few weeks, maybe longer.

Google "Bluetooth Crowdsourcing". Wonder how Apple AirTag works? Now you know.

Power down your iPhone. Look just under the "off" slider.

See where it says....iPhone Findable After Power Off? The message is there for a reason.

Hello Bob Timmons!

So explain this, please:

I loose my iPhone. I look it up on a computer using FindMy, and it shows up, at it’s last location. It had turned off when the ants started playing with the buttons, and started skating across the screen. (Yes, I don’t know how it could turn off, without running out of battery.)

So, I go to its last location, what then? How do I use Bluetooth to find it? AFAIK, one can use Bluetooth to connect one’s earbuds to one’s device, not to find an iPhone!

So explain this to me, please. Thank you!

“Let's forget about the ants” This made me LOL! I guess I don’t understand how a device could go missing, and be off. But I understand this is not the point.

“the Bluetooth signal that is intermittently broadcast from the "lost" iPhone” So, a lost iPhone can broadcast a cellular, wifi, and Bluetooth signal, Bluetooth only when it is powered off. So, can the Bluetooth signal broadcast to my computer (where I’m logged into FindMy) at home? Like a cellular or wifi signal would?

“Google "Bluetooth Crowdsourcing".” I will at a later date, on a computer with a browser.

“Wonder how Apple AirTag works?” Now that you ask, yes!

”Now you know.” Not yet…

“Power down your iPhone. Look just under the "off" slider. See where it says....iPhone Findable After Power Off? The message is there for a reason.” Wow! I’ve seen the message hundreds of times before, without actually realizing how it works! Thank you kindly for explaining, Bob Timmons! I really, really appreciate it! 😊
