Macbook Pro Stuck at 96kHz

I have a mid 2012 MacBook Pro running Catalina 10.15.7.

Any time I go to Audio MIDI setup, and try to change the sample rate of the built-in output to anything but 96kHz it initially lets me, but then keeps flicking back to 96kHz after approximately 10 seconds. It won't stay on 48kHz or 44.1kHz. Built-in Microphone quite happily stays at whatever sample rate I choose.

I've tried resetting core audio, resetting PRAM etc to no avail.

Does anyone have experience with this? Any suggestions I can try?

Should I try re-installling a combo version of catalina (assuming I can find one to download)?

Any assistance would be appreciated as I need to work at 48kHz in ProTools and it keeps interrupting my session and prevents me from working stating that "The HW device is at a different sample rate from the open session"

So I've managed to fix the problem. The culprit was Waves preferences.

After many hours of initialising the HD, and clean installing the macOS Catalina via option+command+R for recovery to the latest macOS compatible with my computer, the problem was gone.

When I cloned my profile from the backup to get all of my applications, preferences, passwords etc back on the computer, the problem returned.

Performing a fresh install of the macOS Catalina without re-formatting the HD and leaving my profile there, didn't work.

Trashing preferences for my profile, (via user/ Library/ Preferences), the Waves Preferences would quickly, magically reappear. I found that if I trashed the Waves preferences, and then changed the Built-in output sample rate before the Waves preferences reappeared, the sample rate would remain as selected. If I changed it after the Waves preferences reappeared, it would switch back to whatever it was when the Waves preferences were present.

Ultimately, uninstalling and then re-installing Waves fixed the issue. Now I can finally get to work. :)

Might be this file, quit Audio Midi Setup & rename this file...

~Library/Preferences/com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist

~ tilde indicates your user library folder

Apple hid the Users' Library folders...

Method 1:

From the Finder, select the Go menu at top of the screen, and choose Go to Folder.
In the window that opens, enter ~/Library, and click Go.

reinstalling the macOS has fixed it. Now to reload my profile etc.

What you're doing may fix it.

On renaming it, in the finder something like...

com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist

To...

com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.oldplist

Just wondering, what do I rename the file “~Library/Preferences/com.apple.audio.AudioMIDISetup.plist” to? Or do I text edit it within to something?

After backing up and erasing the MacHD I’m currently attempting to reinstall Catalina via the reboot then Option+Command+R as it installs the latest compatible version of macOS for my computer via internet recovery. Hoping this will allow the factory reset of my computer that can fix the issue
