I don't know why you're having a problem but it certainly isn't universal.

Apple tells me it is something to do with the size of the spreadsheet and I suspect it is the original Spreadsheet was done in simpler days. Securities have been updated and perhaps Safari has become too incompatible with these older files with historical architecture buried in them.

It looks like Chrome has to become the default for these now.

I'm regularly opening some fairly old (circa 2017) files originally created in Excel without any problem. Also some large files created natively in Sheets.

Mine date back to early 2000's and the original was pre-1990's on a MS system. Apparently the above reason was offered AND I am pulling the file down from Google Drive as well.

Maybe it is the usual finger pointing each way. Just frustrates and habit changing makes life less automated I guess.

Current work around is to cross over to Chrome and let the smarter guys work it out.

I also must bow to your superior "level" @10, I am a lowly level 1 according the the subscript attached to our respective identifiers.

I'm really not trying to deny that people are having a problem. Very few people (yes, there are some) waste their time by posting here with problems that aren't real. However, what I have learned over many years of troubleshooting this sort of technology is that it is usually counter-productive to assume one knows the cause of the problem before troubleshooting (and sometimes even after). My only point in posting was to counter the "Google Sheets don't work in Safari full stop" idea that was being asserted. It's obviously a whole lot more complicated than that. It's possible that there is more than one problem. And, because it appears to be a relatively limited problem, it's going to be hard for whoever is at fault to figure out what the problem is. And, because it isn't affecting huge numbers of people, it's also not going to be a priority. Sad but true.

I also experience a hang; on a file called "test"

The sheet basically loads the first few lines; then hangs; then reloads the entire sheet. Whole process takes about 40-50 seconds. And then hangs on some basic calculations in cells when performed.

I have the same problem for the last week. We are waiting for corrections from Apple and Google!

Roman-Sozinov I think they will say it is an individual file issue.

Me too! Only on large files, small ones seems to work fine. Chrome has no problem whatsoever, but I need Safari!

Looks like it was solved yesterday for a very short period of time but today the error is back... very strange. Anybody else can confirm?
