Urgent - Time Sensitive: keynote file damaged and can't open

Hi All,

My Keynote file with over 200 slides isn't opening. Not on my iMac 2021 or my MacBook Pro Mid2010.

In fact, that might be the problem. It's possible I used the MacBook to open it and read through it. I wouldn't have saved it or made any changes because of its age but now I can't get access.

I've tried everything I can think of but I am a tech dinosaur.

The macOS keynote says, "the file is damaged and can't be opened."

This file is my entire training programme which launches on Friday and I have yet to finish recording it. I am running out of time. Can anyone please give me advice?

The file is stored in Google Drive, I can't seem to find historical versions and struggling to open iCloud to find out if it's backed up there.

Oh, I should mention it's a large file, not only many slides but also I have video in it too.

1 - What happens when you convert the Keynote file to a single file as described in the notification you have shown?

2 - Download the file to your Mac and test, don't open Keynote files from online storage.

3 - You indicate you don't have a backup Keynote file stored on a local external drive, Why not?

4 - You can also try this all encompassing routine, it fixes many Keynote errors, no guarantee it will fix this issue

complete all of the following steps, in the order listed:

  • close all applications
  • uninstall Keynote; for this procedure to work, an application removal tool must be used, App Delete has a free trial and works for this procedure. It can be downloaded from the developer’s website here:

  • empty the Trash (Finder > Empty Trash
  • restart the Mac (Apple Menu > Restart) and immediately press the shift key on the keyboard, release the shift key when the Apple icon appears. Start up will take longer than usual as the Mac is performing a software repair of the start up drive
  • after the Mac is fully powered up, restart the Mac normally:   Apple Menu > Restart
  • reinstall Keynote from the Mac App Store Application and test
