My AirPods Max won’t wake from sleep

My AirPods Max doesn’t wake up from sleep when I wear it on my head.

Requires either one of the following to fix the issue every single time:

  • Connect it to power
  • Hard reset
  • Repeatedly placing it in case and head alternatively.

Almost always the hard reset seems to fix the issue, but it’s too much of a hassle to do. Taking even a 5 mins break from work seems to become a big task because I have to go through this process every single time.

I’m scared to take it to apple servicing since warranty is expired and don’t wish for the issue to become worse afterwards. But if no other option, I might have to do just that.

Is there any solution for this old problem that has fixed this issue ?

Edit:

  1. sometimes, the AirPods show up in my devices as connected but won’t change audio output to the headphones. Ultimately, I would have to do a hard reset at this point.
  2. This issue used to be worse before the latest updates “5E135”(occasionally it wouldn’t even get to the hard reset)

Hi Jasonmatt93,

Making sure we're on the same page, when you say you hard reset the AirPods, did you take the steps below?

If so and the issue recurs consistently, we would recommend contacting Apple Support to take a closer look as your firmware is fully updated and a reset should clear out any lingering possible software related issues that can be taken from your end.

Take care.

Hi DerekM87,

Thank you for your response.

Ive following this exact steps to reset the headphones. I can see the firmware also matches with the latest version.

I’m suspecting it could be a hardware issue in terms of the sensors not working as before.

I’ve talked with apple support. They’ve recommended me to visit an apple authorised service Center close to me.

Im scared to take it to these places because I’ve had bad experiences with more issues popping up after giving stuff there. And since AirPods Max isn’t a very common product, lack of experience could maybe make it completely unusable.
