Something I have noticed with this year iPad line yup why are they not giving older models of iPads like the 9 generation stage manger this would be such a great thing to have so then people that can’t afford other more expensive models get the same great features that the can afford.

Due to limitations of internal hardware, the new Stage Manager feature introduced with iPadOS 16.1 is only available for these models of iPad:

  • iPad Air (5th generation)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (all generations)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later)

Feature availability is usually limited by system hardware - CPU and available RAM being critical to some advanced functionality.

iPad models supporting Stage Manager have an M2, M1 or A12X CPU (upon which the M-series CPUs are reportedly based) - with at least 8GB RAM. The iPad9 has only 3GB RAM.

Whether or not a functionally limited version of Stage Manager, compatible with models of iPad that do not meet the current hardware requirements, will ever be released is unknown.

Stage Manager at least, requires an Apple silicon M1 or M2 CPU. The much older A13 CPU used by the iPad 9 does not have the speed or resources for Stage Manager since it needs to keep many apps open and available at the same time, and has to switch them seamlessly. The older CPUs would cause lag and an unpleasant experience if they were to support it.

It's a fact of life cheaper products have less features. You want more features, you need to pay for them. There's a reason the iPad 9 is almost $300 cheaper than the cheapest iPad Air that can support Stage Manager.

What you are proposing is to make the more expensive iPads redundant and pointless when you can get all their features in a cheaper older version? What would then compel anyone to buy the more expensive ones?

The more expensive iPads get more features. That is a fact of life with things. Does a 25,000 car get the same features and niceties as a 60,000 car?
