Apple Watch strap causing skin irritation
Somehow an article popped up about materials in Apple bands, and that is exactly what I needed! Unfortunately I needed it at least two years ago, but it is still of help now.

Allergies can relate to skin, or lungs or digestion or any number of things. Allergies that cause skin irrigations do not necessarily also cause breathing problems at the same time. If the OP is experiencing a contact allergy from the band, it wouldn't make them cough.
