Wrong album art in Music on iPhone

I just imported a bunch of albums (CDs ripped to mp3) into Music on my Mac. I manually added album artwork for all the albums that Music couldn't find it for automatically.

All looks fine so far, but now I synced my iPhone with my Mac to load my collection there as well, and for 32 out of about 280 albums, the artwork is wrong, just randomly reshuffled, some covers duplicated, others missing. It's a mess.

Note that the artwork is only messed up on the phone. On my laptop, everything is still OK.

As a software developer myself, I find it rather shocking that a bug this bad is even present in major app like this, but the immediate question is, how do I fix this?

Are you an Apple Music or iTunes Match subscriber? We're asking because it may be expected that your new content will attempt to automatically match the artwork in Apple's music library and pull the official artwork from their servers.

If you're not a subscriber or the artwork doesn't seem to be the official artwork, you may need to reach out to Apple Support directly for this one. You can find ways to reach them here:

As stated in our previous message, if you're a subscriber, the artwork is automatically synced from the Apple Music library. Since this is not the case for you, you'll want to contact Apple Support so that they can look into this with you further. They can be reached here: Get Support

I'm not a subscriber, but I don't understand how that is relevant. Some of the content in my library was purchased from iTunes, and some was imported from files. Most of the content had its artwork loaded automatically, the rest I loaded manually. But the key point is this:

On my Mac, all albums now have the correct artwork. On my iPhone, 32 albums have the wrong artwork.

Apparently, things got messed up in transit while I synced the phone with my laptop over USB. Why does that happen, and how do I fix it?
