Alternative to LG 24MD4KL-B Monitor

I am currently using my 2011 iMac as the monitor for my M1 MB Air using screen sharing and SwitchRes X. While this works, it's a bit of kludge since I have to boot up the iMac and set up screen sharing whenever I need to use it. I am not currently using the iMac for any other tasks as it cannot run the current versions of a number of applications.

Apple is no longer selling the LG Ultrafine 24" 24MD4KL-B 4K monitor in their stores and I see that most online dealers list it as out of stock. I contacted LG directly and they confirmed it was out of stock but did not say it was discontinued.

There are many other monitors (both 27" and 32") out there from LG and Dell in particular that I see being touted by various reviewers. These monitors are actually cheaper as well but I am hesitant for a few reasons.

First, they are USB-C, not Thunderbolt.

Second, they do not scale ideally to Macs although most reviewers say it's not really noticeable.

Third, they are not controlled through my Mac's display controls.

I am looking for feedback from users about whether I should try to buy the LG Ultrafine immediately from the few dealers on Amazon who still have them or go ahead and shop for a different monitor that is not ideally scaled.

I heard back from LG, the 24" Ultrafine monitor 4K has been discontinued. They are still selling the 27" 5K model.

The reason I was interested in the 24" monitor is that it was designed together with Apple for use with Macs, Thunderbolt 3, all connections USB-C, no need for use screen controls instead all settings done inside the display preferences, powers on and off with the laptop, etc. I had been looking at it for a while then I noticed that noone had it in stock any more.

Guess I'll scratch it off the list.

I've had a couple of the 24" Ultrafine monitor 4K for a while now and whilst they might be expensive they are by a country mile the best 4K display you can get IMO and perfect for using with my MBPs - no other display comes close especially because of the Thunderbolt and USB-C support. I've also got a couple of the previous generation 21.5" displays but there's signs of screen burn now however they're both still working perfectly otherwise.

So, co-incidentally I was thinking last night about replacing the 21.5" displays, but to my dismay I too found that the 24" ones have been discontinued. However there is still some old stock floating around and initially I found them on Amazon UK for £682, pricey but I was prepared to pay that. However, a bit more Googling later and I found them on Costco for £599. That's less than the £620 I paid 2 years ago! I've signed up to Costco today and order a pair.

Not sure which part of the world you're located but good luck in your search - don't give up as there's bound to be some stock floating around.

For a 24" monitor, 4K resolution is definitely a plus. It also seems to be nearly impossible to find – outside of that 24" LG monitor, and the built-in 4.5K display on the 24" M1 iMac. You'd think that since we're talking about UHD TV resolution, our cups would be running over with 24" 4K monitors that benefit from the large volumes of scale associated with Ultra HD TV production. But 4K monitor vendors seem to be concentrating on 27"-32" screens.

Having all of the monitor settings done from the computer can be a disadvantage. Monitors that have this feature require software on the computer side to support it. That software is often platform-specific (Windows only, Mac only, newer Macs only), which can limit the ability to reuse the monitor. There are monitors that feature both local menu controls (universal) and the ability to change settings from supported computers, but I don't recall if the 24" LG 4K monitor is one of them.

Hi everyone! I'm also looking to get a monitor for my M2 macbook air. I do a lot of desk work and have back pain from using the macbook. My problem is I also have fairly sensitive eyes so I need a monitor which is super crisp and with uniform lighting, like the retina displays on the macs.

My first idea was to get an iMac M1 but I also need to wonder around the office sometimes to take calls and stuff so I would not like to have 2 separate computers. I'm also thinking longer term when I'd have 2 computers to replace.

I still found some stock of the 24" Ultrafine. It's 800€. I don't know what the initial pricing was but seems a little high.

I don't want larger monitors... even the 24" seems a little too much. Right now I'm using a QHD Lenovo Q24h-10 monitor and while the text and colours are pretty good, you can clearly see that it gets darker towards the edges.

My questions are:

Is the Ultrafine at the level of the M1 iMacs? Will I have the same perfect image, crisp text and uniform lighting across the screen?

Do you think it will be compatible with new Macs in 2-3 years when I'll need a new macbook?

If the answer to both questions is yes, I think it would be the best deal.
