Emails won’t send in any app

I can receive emails in my email app. But it won’t send them out. I’ve tried several apps. Gmail and yahoo app works fine. But the other email apps that can be used for my local email carrier do not allow me to send emails out. None of them send because of authentication issue. I need to shut off the two factor authentication feature. How do I do this? This is crazy.

When you can receive mail, but not send it, it usually means that there is an incorrect, or no password set for the SMTP setting. Email applications have a password for the incoming mail and one for the outgoing(SMTP) mail, which is usually always the same.

If you are using the Mail app, the setting is located at Settings > Mail > Accounts > [your mail account] > SMTP. Tap on the Primary Server and fill in the password.

Without seeing the error message you are getting, I'm assuming the authentication issue is the password and not two-factor authentication.

What do you have for the Host Name of the Outgoing Mail Server at that same location provided above?

Who is the email provider?

Under User Name, some providers require the full email address, while others only want the name without the "@" location.

Usually the SSL switch should be on.

The Authentication type should be set to Password

The Server Port number is dependent on the email provider.

Is Private Really turned on on the Mac? Check under iCloud/iCloud in settings. Or is a VPN turned on? There is a toggle for Private Relay. I would also look at the mail settings on the phone and make sure they are identical to everything on the Mac. Same with network settings. Maybe you are missing something really small.

Start with initial fault finding:

What happens when you try to receive or send email? Do you see any errors - and if so, what do you see?

If email is failing to send or receive, you are likely to see indicative errors at the bottom of the mail sidebar - the wording of the error usually providing sufficient information to determine the nature of the problem.

Deleting and re-adding your email account is sometimes the easiest way to resolve a problem with a specific Mail account. After deleting the account, perform a forced restart before re-adding the email account to your iPad.

  • Delete account:

Settings > Mail > Accounts > [Your Mail Account] > Delete Account

  • Force restart the iPad:

Force restart iPad - Apple Support

  • Add Mail Account:

Settings > Mail > Add Account

Also be aware that some email providers now require the use of App Specific Passwords when accessing mail over IMAP or POP3. If this applies to your email account, you will need to generate a unique password for your iPad email account - that will differ from your normal Account Password. As examples - AOL, Yahoo, Google, Microsoft all use App Specific Passwords when using anything other than their own email client Apps.

If you need to generate an App Specific Password, you’ll need to log-in to your Mail Providers account management webpage - using a web browser - and generate the Password from the appropriate account security page.

For Yahoo, more information can be found here:
