Mac Photos won't sync to Iphone and Icloud. Gets stuck on "updating"

Hello. I've read several threads here about this topic but none of the solutions that i found worked for me. So i recently left for a long trip to southamerica. I purchased 500gb of icloud storage to make sure my memories are saved, even if my phone gets stolen or breaks. i also found it convenient to have my photos on all my devices....

unfortunately i can't get my photos app on macbook air m1 to sync with icloud. it gets stuck on "updating" and it won't change. i will now list some hardfacts and what i already tried/checked:

• its the same apple id on all my devices - my girlfriend has basically the same setup and hers works fine without any hassle.
• i restarted my mac several times
• i created a new library and chose it as the main one
• i checked if syncing is activated at all
• i am connected to wifi
• my photos do appear on the icloud homepage - so they are synced to the icloud
• i tried some of these steps several times already
