iPhone volume when conversing with another person with phone to my ear is extremely low

I have iPhone 8. I CAN control/increase volume on ring, music, speaker etc. However, I CANNOT find a way to Increase the volume while on a call speaking to someone without the speaker turned on.. basically when conversing with another person with phone to my ear the volume is EXTREMELY LOW. It’s like the person speaking is on the other side of the world..

Use the volume buttons while on a call. The buttons are context-sensitive; they control the volume for the app you are using at the time. So the ringer and alert volume is controlled only when on the Home screen; when using a music or video app the same buttons control the volume for the sound level, independent of what you set for the ringer. And likewise, when on a phone call the same buttons control the phone volume.
