CarPlay issues with 2022 Rav 4 Hybrid

I too am having issues with CarPlay connectivity ever since updating to IOS 16.5. Worked fine the day before updating and now can’t use any steering wheel buttons to control and sometimes just won’t connect at all. Very frustrating. This is NOT a Toyota issue, this is clearly from the Apple update! Please fix!

I'm in the same boat as everyone here. My 2022 Rav4's Carplay has been useless ever since the the 16.5 update. I've had to take 2 road trips (as is customary during the Summer) with unreliable connectivity with my GPS because my phone will disconnect and reconnect with Carplay every couple of minutes. As was mentioned, this is highly dangerous as you are distracted from the road, and the fact that Apple appears to be completely unwilling to even acknowledge it is ridiculous.

I've tried all the troubleshooting. They haven't fixed it. It is a bug with the os.

Guess my next device will be Android. I've had an iPhone for something like 20 years, but the quality of Apple's software has gotten more and more terrible over the last decade.

Hi, I updated to 16.5.1 (a).

I also;

-went to Face ID & Passcode and turned on Allow Access When Locked > Accessories.

-turned off equalizer.

I tested with new update, and it initially didn't recognize CarPlay, then did when I plugged it in again.

I don't know if it will continually disconnect.

But initial start up said "USB not connected" on Rav4 display.

2022 Rav4 Hybrid. Same issue for me. Carplay crashes every 90 seconds or less with iOS 16.5 and disables volume controls. Didn’t happen prior to updating to iOS 16.5. Does not happen with my wife’s phone using the same cable and car, but she’s on iOS14. Does not happen with my phone using the same cable in a Ford F150. So it’s an incompatibility with iOS 16.5 with Rav4’s it seems… Please fix!!

Fellow Carplay Sufferers,

I found a possible workaround. I've been able to complete two 30-minute drives without a Carplay crash.

If you wait until you have put your vehicle into drive and are moving before you connect your phone, that seems to be the trick. I don't know if it's (1) the fact that the vehicle is in drive, (2) the fact that the vehicle is moving, (3) or the fact that it's simply been a few minutes since the car has been turned on. I suspect it's number 3 and the car just needs time to get through its startup routine.

The above has been working for me. I hope it helps others. Also, last weekend I wiped my phone and set it back up from scratch. That didn't fix the Carplay issue but it did fix another 16.5 issue I was having where my phone was warm all day long and the battery was drastically worse than before 16.5.

Hi, Thanks for the update. I noticed the same thing with my car. If I wait for the dash to start then unlock my phone, and use an apple cable, I can "usually" get a full drive without a reset. But I'll still lose ability to use volume on the radio most times.

Since the update, Toyota is definitely having a communication issue with the iPhone.

I have Birdseye camera "Auto" activated on my screen and I notice that a lot of the dash resets are when I slow for a light. I have been trying to figure out which combination might work the best.

-In Rav4 forums, I notice that a dash reset by removing my Personal Account in the Toyota system could clear the issue.

some people also recommend disconnecting the 12v battery for a reset, but I'm going to try removing my account first to see if that helps.

My device has the updated 16.5.1(c) version of IOS. Unfortunately that didn't fix the issue as it is still doing the same disconnection/reconnection stuff it was doing before.

Had an issue the other day where I needed to use my GPS to find a business, but instead of being able to utilize my HUD, I had to hold my phone in my hand, looking at when to make turns and what streets to turn on. Very dangerous and inconvenient. Good thing I don't live in a state where you can get a ticket for having your device out while you are driving.

This is pretty pathetic on Apple's part that I have seen nothing about their response or intended fix to this issue.
