CarPlay issues with 2022 Rav 4 Hybrid

I too am having issues with CarPlay connectivity ever since updating to IOS 16.5. Worked fine the day before updating and now can’t use any steering wheel buttons to control and sometimes just won’t connect at all. Very frustrating. This is NOT a Toyota issue, this is clearly from the Apple update! Please fix!

I currently own a 2020 Rav4, and my phone is doing the same thing. My steering wheel works on Bluetooth and regular radio, but apple car play is not working. I can plug my phone in and it pops up on the screen, but my steering wheel skip buttons do not work what so ever. I can tap the screen to skip the button, but I liked the feature of not having to look away from the road in order to change a song. this stopped working around when IOS 16 came out. Toyota has checked my car and found nothing wrong with it mechanically and electronically

Splurged a bit and got the Magic Box transmitter. Have had no drops or issues like before. There's a slight bit of lag with certain actions like changing a song on Apple Music, but it's only a tiny bit. Beats the heck out of Carplay being completely non-functional. AND I now have wireless Carplay.

Still think Apple should be held responsible for this ridiculous bug that they have not even acknowledged. Every article I see where the headline talks about some bug in the new OS I click on to see if they so much as mention ANY Carplay issues. And there never is. Very poor form by Apple and their dev team!

Happy to report that jj1565 was correct! Any CarPlay transmitter will likely work but I am VERY happy with the WQQBFF brand one on Amazon. 6 days now, no disconnects. The bug is certainly a wired CarPlay bug then. Removing the lightning port from the equation is the best fix. I actually think this connects faster than wired, but I am not sure why. It seems like the phone registers that it is “time to send CarPlay data” faster to the wireless device. Using steering wheel controls for next/previous track has a 2 second delay but volume is instant and so is tap interactions with the screen and map while in wireless CarPlay. I love my 2022 RAV4 Limited again. Thanks for the tip, JJ!

Yup. Wired CarPlay in these models of RAV4 has been broken since iOS 16.5. I am thankful for a wireless protocol and workaround, but it’s a shame it’s not fixed yet. I am a longtime IT guy and had my colleagues all A-B testing their iPhones in my car on various versions of iOS the day it all broke. I filed an apple radar/feedback. Nothing on it so far. Every phone on 16.4 and back works perfectly fine. Rolling back is NOT ideal for many reasons so the way forward is a wireless dongle and hope apple addresses it.
