Recovery of Unix Executable File (exec) during USB failure?

Hello!

I am wondering if anyone has knowledge if data can be recovered from files that were corrupted during a USB failure. My USB overheated, I believe, and then showed it was "not ejected properly" and then re-booted and when I viewed it again one of the folders appeared as a black box with green lettering stating "exec" (shown below). The title of the folder was "Photos-Unknown" as they were unidentified old family photos, so I would like to recover them if it is possible.

Any help is appreciated, even if it is that there is nothing that can be done so that I know if I should continue trying to recover them or not. Thank you!

When I attempt to open the file, it states the following:

"Last login: Sun Jun  4 21:57:14 on ttys001

savannahm@Savannahs-MacBook-Pro ~ % /Volumes/SAVANNAHM/Ancestry\ Files/Paternal\ Ancestry\ /\!Unknown/Photos-\ Unknown ; exit;

...completed.

It says

Size: Zero bytes

meaning that there is no data in that file, according to the file system.

Is this from a USB Flash drive , or a spinning platters hard drive with USB connection?

For NAND, SDD, recovery seems near impossible. HHDs may sometimes work (partially) through recovery tools.

The Mac will see unknown files without file extension as ‘Unix Executable Files’, even if they’re not. It is an assumption that will not be effective in situations like this.
