I cannot access desktop and document folder - error state original item is missing/deleted.

I cloud is not an off computer storage facility. It's a syncing facility so all devices signed into the same Apple ID and with iCloud Drive enabled can have access to the same files. They are mirrored in the User/Home/Library/Mobile Documents folder.

Check to see if they are in there.

If by default iCloud Drive got turned on— look for your files there.

And what about from the Find sidebar ... make changes to Finder>Settings

if you see no Locations and/or iCloud Drive in your Finder window move your mouse to the right hand side and spin the carrot.
