Do you have 2 factor authentication turned on? If you do, then Apple can call you, email you or text you that code as many times as needed, using either the phone number or email address you gave to them… in addition if you have an iPhone or iPad, it can be used as a trusted device to help with this… otherwise… go here… —> Apple ID - Official Apple Support

A prompt for a 6-digit code sounds an awful lot like a prompt for 2-factor authentication.

Two-factor authentication for Apple ID - Apple Support

The computer will expect a different code each time that it asks for one. Apple will send the code to a trusted phone number or device (one they have reason to think belongs to you).

This would be an extra obstacle to a criminal who had somehow managed to obtain your AppleID password but who didn't have possession of any of your trusted devices, or your trusted phone(s).
