First, compatibility. Verify that your Apple Pencil is compatible with your iPad:

The first and second generation Pencil use a completely different pairing and charging interface - and are not interchangeable between iPad models. Each model of iPad, that supports Apple Pencil, will support either the first or second generation Pencil.
