Having opened an email on my iPad and scrolling through the message it becomes locked and I cannot open any items within the email. Occasionally, after a short period of time, I am able to open the item but, invariably, it means closing the message and re-opening, sometimes with the same result.

If your iPad is not performing as expected, try a forced restart:
Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)
If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:
Force restart iPad (models with the Home button)
Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
