AirTags without iPhone or iPad?

I went to my local Apple Store today, looking to buy an AirTag - to learn that they can only be configured using an iPhone or iPad connected to my AppleID. How is it that a Macbook user can't purchase and configure an AirTag without having to also have a mobile device - considering also that once configured the AirTag is absolutely compatible with the Find My function built into macOS?

Because that's the way Apple designed it. Until they make an announcement about "why", no one here would be able to give you any other answers. ku4hx did understand what you were asking. There is just nothing we, your fellow users, can tell you other than to submit feedback.

Best I can tell, the Tile Tracker, perhaps the best-known competitor, also requires a mobile device.

I may have not expressed myself clearly - I wanted an AirTag to track my bag/luggage while traveling in a rather more reliable way than any competition products can provide. I am already an Apple user, just not mobile devices. I don't understand what having it necessarily pair with a phone brings to user experience as opposed to also opening it to Mac users that have no other devices.
