What type of payment are you attempting to make? Would this be for paid Apps, subscriptions or Apple services - on online purchases? Something else?

Credit Card details, used for payments, can be stored in potentially three places…

1) For online payments when using the Safari Browser, credit card information is found in the Safari AutoFill settings:

Settings > Safari > AutoFill > Saved Credit Cards

Existing Credit Card entries can be removed by tapping the corresponding entry; next, tap Edit at top-right - and then Delete Credit Card. Cards can be added using the Add Credit Card button.

2) Payment Card information that is associated with an AppleID account - used to purchase Apps, Subscriptions, Media and services via Apple - are managed from AppleID settings. See:

Change, add, or remove Apple ID payment methods - Apple Support

You should note that not all payment Cards can be used with your AppleID account.

3) Your Wallet - where you can store Credit Cards registered for ApplePay:

Set up Apple Pay on iPad - Apple Support

If you only have a single Credit Card set-up for your AppleID account, you will need to add a new Credit Card to your AppleID account - after which you will be able to delete the old card details.

It is often a good idea to have two (or more) payment cards associated with your account - as, in case there is a problem with your primary card, a charge can be made to the second card without risk of impacting ongoing access to your AppleID account or associated services and subscriptions. With multiple Credit Cards, you can choose the sequence in which card payments are made.

Assuming that your payment card is supported, if you cannot resolve the problem yourself, you would be best advised to seek assistance directly from Apple Support:

You can also initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:
