It is possible to purchase extra RAM for the 2011 iMac.

Memory Upgrades for Apple iMac 2011 Up to 32GB - OWC/macsales.com

However, increasing the amount of RAM in the machine will rarely increase the performance of the computer in everyday use. More often than not the performance bottleneck will likely be the hard disk drive or something related to the software load in the machine.

With a vintage Mac such as yours, it could well be the effect of an aging hdd. Rather than put good money into RAM or other hardware upgrades, you'd be wise to consider simply purchasing a newer computer. If your budget is tight - who's isn't? - I recommend you look at Apple Refurbished Macintosh computers. A factory refurbished Mac mini with M2 cpu can be had for as little as ~ $500, and could easily carry you forward for a decade.
