That's why I'd like to see a screenshot. If you are just going to dig in and figure it out yourself, there is no point in posting the question. Questions like yours do not have instant-fix answers (usually). We may be of help figuring out the why and provide a solution.

I tried to create a field that contained both a currency-like string and a date-like string. It didn't matter what I chose for the cell type as each one cannot be displayed as the other. That would be an example of it appearing to "not work," but that's not the same as not possible.

ISTR this happening to me on a PC. Excel formatted a cell and just would not let go. I think I had to jut start over with a new spreadsheet.

Yes, I understand. I wanted to see what is "not working." I think it will be a lot simpler to take a picture than for you to describe in enough detail to explain, "not working."

Is this for Excel or Numbers?

As they say a picture is worth a thousand words. A screenshot of the menu expanded and the cell would be helpful.

What is actually in the cell?

I can't imagine anything that looks like a date could possibly be converted into currency.
