ipad/iphone

I have an older ipad that I want to use for home and its synced to my iphone 14 pro max. I only want to use certain apps on my ipad and not have it mirror my phone. Can I delete the apps not needed on my ipad along with photos to free up space?

Absolutely, managing apps and data individually on your iPad and iPhone is entirely possible, even if they are synced to the same Apple ID. Here's a more detailed explanation:

**Managing Apps**:

On your iPad, you can delete any unneeded apps without them being removed from your iPhone. Simply press and hold on the app you want to delete until a pop-up menu appears, then choose 'Remove App' > 'Delete App'. Confirm your decision, and the app will be deleted from your iPad only.

If you have 'Offload Unused Apps' enabled, ensure that you choose 'Delete App' instead of 'Offload App'. Offloading an app will delete it but keep its documents and data, potentially taking up some space on your iPad.

**Managing Photos**:

Managing photos can be a bit more complex because if iCloud Photos is turned on, your photos are synced across all devices using the same Apple ID.

If you want to delete photos only from your iPad, you should disable iCloud Photos on that device. You can do that by going to 'Settings' > '[your name]' > 'iCloud' > 'Photos', then toggle off 'iCloud Photos'.

Once you've done this, you can delete any photos from your iPad by opening the Photos app, selecting the photos, and then tapping the trash icon. These changes won't affect your iPhone.

**Freeing Up More Space**:

In addition to removing apps and photos, you can also clear cached data and documents in your iPad's storage settings. Navigate to 'Settings' > 'General' > 'iPad Storage'. Here, you'll see a list of your apps and how much space they're using. Tapping on an app will give you more information and options to delete its data.

Remember to always back up your data before making significant changes. You can do this either through iCloud or by connecting your iPad to a computer and using iTunes. This way, you can recover your information if needed.

Finally, after any major deletions, it's good practice to restart your iPad to ensure all processes are running smoothly.

I hope this detailed guide assists you. Let me know if you have further questions!

First, your Photos…

Before deleting anything, ensure that you have disabled iCloud Photos on at least one of your devices. If enabled, iCloud Photos will synchronise your Photo Library between devices; new photos added, or deleted, will be synchronised.

Settings > [Your Name / AppleID] > Photos > Sync This iPad | iPhone - set to OFF

Next, check your App Store settings on both your iPad and iPhone:

Settings > App Store > [Automatic Downloads] App Downloads - set to OFF

This setting ensures that new Apps that you purchase are not automatically installed on both devices.

After changing these settings, Photos and Apps can be deleted from one device without impacting the other.

Thank you so much for the quick reply. I started this process earlier and stated to remove apps from my iPad. I tested one and checked it against my phone and my phone still had the apps. I haven't performed any syncs just yet so should I reset the iPad to factory settings and start over again and then apply the information you provided in your reply?

Resetting to factory settings will erase everything - and as such, is perhaps not the way forward.

After making the changes that I have suggested, all should be fine. If you have already deleted your photos (and the deletion has been synchronised between iPad and iPhone), you have a short period of opportunity (30 days) to recover the deleted photos from iCloud storage. If instead iCloud Photos was never enabled, you should have nothing to worry about.
