Why does it need cleaning? If there are articles in it then try using compressed air to blow them out. Do not under any circumstances insert something that contains metal or is sharp. You may very gently try using a wooden toothpick to dislodge debris but you always risk damaging the internal contacts. If that happens you are out of luck and up the creek.

Use a small flashlight and a toothpick to clean lint and dust from the port. Be very careful when you do this. A quick shot or two of compressed air would not hurt, just don't get the can too close to the phone.
