HDMI into Macbook pro

I am a history researcher, and a lot of the material I reference is not (yet) available online, so I find myself at times dealing with audio CDs, DVDs and BluRay sources. I have a Denon multi format player that I use in my studio and I'm wondering if anyone has a simple answer to the idea of connecting that deck TO the Macbook Pro. The, to me, obvious solution is an HDMI to Thunderbolt 4 adapter. Is this viable? Does anyone have suggestions? Is there software that I will also need?

Most USB-C to HDMI adapters are for video output.

As the previous poster said, what you want is a device advertised as a capture card. These do exist, but you might have to look harder to find them.

A bugger issue is that most commercial DVD-Video and Blu-Ray Video discs will trigger HDCP DRM on the HDMI output of video players. Many capture cards will only capture NON-DRMed video such as a live feed from a digital camera, or the video on a DVD or Blu-Ray disc that you authored using home videos.

The MacBook Pro does not have a video input solution directly.

To capture video into the MacBook Pro, you need what is known as a video capture card and associated software. Each capture device will have its own software to capture the video. The video is played from the external player and captured in realtime through the capture card. Depending on the length of the video this can take a very long time.

For things like CDs., DVDs and Blu-ray's an actual external optical drive with a USB connection that can read the discs is a much easier and cheaper choice.

The Apple Music app can rip the audio CDs directly.

For video DVDs and Blu-rays, something like Handbrake can help you convert them to a digital format without having to actually play them. Its a much faster process than real time playback and capture.
