laptop battery deteriorating fast

I realized that my 14" 2021 Macbook Pro, M1 Max, Ventura 13.4 has been losing the battery capacity rather too fast. My first battery health check showed 97.5% on 4 charge cycles. Now, 5 months later, at charge cycle 81, the capacity is at 91.1%. I also notice that my charge drops from around 80% to 30% within 3-4 hours (far from advertised 11 hours with wifi on. What are my options at this stage?

You are certainly free to have Apple evaluate, which I strongly recommend, but first see if you have installed software that is accelerating battery drain:

1) Anti-virus software. The shorten runtime amount you cite is typical of what AV products do to batteries.

2) So-called "cleaning" apps.

3) Google Chrome is documented as reducing runtime on both Mac and Windows notebook batteries faster than other browswers.

Also remember that "health" is an inexact number. At its core is the "design capacity " of the battery which is an average, not a single precise value. No two batteries have the same initial capacity.

It also varies with time. Look at this example of how much variation in health readings there is in my 10-year old Macbook Pro's battery over 10 months:

Thanks, Allan.

I don't have AV or the cleaning apps. I use Chrome very very rarely. Usually on Firefox and occasionally on Safari / Edge.

I do, however, have apps like LittleSnitch and Alfred, Dropbox running in the background. I also use an app to control battery charge to remain between 30-80% (doing 100% calibration charge every 2-3 weeks). I wonder if these have a significant effect.
