Why doesn't the new iMac work with the Apple Optical Drive?

Why doesn't my new iMac work with the Apple optical drive? The drive still works on my old iMac. That iMac has the old USB plugs. This new one does not, but I bought an Apple approved adapter that works for my Time Machine drive. I mention this because it is a similar device. It needs power from the computer, and it apparently gets it. But the optical drive is dead. What is the deal, Apple? Oh, and just so we are all on the same page, Apple's support references an document that was released before the new iMacs were released. There is no mention of what we should do, because there was no iMac without a plug for the old USB. I spent hours online with Apple support staff who were great at customer service, but clearly don't know much about the issue.

The Apple USB SuperDrive is compatible with Mac computers introduced in 2008 or later that don't have a built-in optical drive.

The biggest mistake users make is trying to connect the optical drive via a USB Hub or Dock. You MUST connect the drive to a port on your iMac only, using an adapter.

As has been said a number of times here, a SuperDrive works with Apple silicon Macs including the new 24" M1 iMac when the drive is attached directly into a port using any number of adapters including…

USB-C to USB Adapter - Apple

USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter - Apple

or even cheap USB to USB C adapters from Amazon among others.

The drive has to be working of course and be right side up, black side down.
