Hi Guys,

Well, I took the plunge and factory reset my friends old MacBook Pro as she wasn’t bothered about losing the Audio Files she had on iTunes.

I reinstalled Yosemite, logged into iTunes and everything was still there! Result!!!

However, (there’s always a but). When I log into safari I am unable to enter a value into the search bar but a get a greyed screen with a white line across it and can’t click on any links in the search.

Anyone got any ideas?

If I understand you correctly, the problem is isolated to Google's search page, and not searching in general.

Safari uses an integrated Smart Search field. Typing something into it uses the Search Engine you select in its Preferences. Change it by following these instructions: Safari Search preferences on Mac - Apple Support. That document is written for High Sierra but it should remain applicable to Yosemite.

If the Google search page does not work then contact Google for assistance, but they will almost certainly tell you they don't support older operating systems and their website is not likely to work with them.

Thanks. If I understand correctly, it seems no matter which Search Engine you select, the results will cause a page to load showing a white line on a grey background and the page is effectively useless.

Please determine if the same problems occur if you were to restart your Mac in "Safe Mode": How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. I tried safe mode and still the problem exists.

However, I tried again using a different search engine and this time it worked!

I changed it back to Google and the issue returned.

I guess the issue lies with Google no longer operating on old systems as you say.

Anyway, for what its required for, it now works fine.

Many thanks
