I see. According to using Voice Memos, when you start recording within the app, the circular orange indicator will appear on the right.

When you leave an app while using the microphone, the orange indicator behind the clock will then be displayed. Nothing you don’t know, of course. Just ensuring that everything’s straight across the board. 😊

Yes, that is the mic indicator, and it is on the right.

But the indicator behind the clock is for the app using the microphone, not for the microphone itself. If you were using the Maps app and left it there would still be an indicator behind the clock for the Maps app, even though Maps doesn’t use the microphone. As I recall, it would be blue (I can’t check because my 14 puts it in the floating island, but it is blue there). And of you had a streaming app in background it would indicate the streaming app with a colored background behind the clock.

No one will answer this unfortunately. Try power cycling your phone. The answers about the apps running or voicememo etc obviously don’t apply as I had the same problem. If you kill all apps, there’s nothing that can be accessing it. And it’s the clock highlighted orange on the left. It’s not an app indicator or anything ap related - it wouldn’t be bc you killed apps. Some sort of bug that seems like a short term glitch. A power cycle may resolve it. Other than that; no one has an answer thus far.

That was an unusual way to phrase it. Typically, people refer to the position of elements on a phone based on how they appear to the user looking at the screen. So, to clarify: the microphone indicator on an iPhone appears on the top left side of the screen from the user's perspective.

Anyway on same topic orange indication randomly appeared without showing which app is using. That happened if i switch fb messenger to whatsapp back and forth, then it randomly appears, no audio messages are being recorded. if I swipe down from the top-right corner where it usually shows privacy when microphone, camera or location is used, that privacy field does not appear so it is unclear which app is using the microphone. If that would be whatsapp using it I would prefer to see it on the privacy field.

I’ve experienced the orange over clock in the upper left as well after using video chat in WhatsApp. It stayed orange even through multiple calls after not using WhatsApp using standard calling. I had to power my iPhone 12 off to stop it. Makes me wonder if I was being listened to or had been hacked via WhatsApp. Occasionally I get random messages from non contacts on WhatsApp.
