iPhone 6 and earlier can update as far as iOS 12, at most, and are not supported on newer iOS versions.

iPhone 6s and iPhone 7 can be updated to iOS 15, and are not supported on newer.

iPhone Xs is the minimum for the iOS 17 preview.

There can be other limits, and other things—such as add-on VPN apps—that can cause problems.
