Devices connected through USB-C multi-port adapter not appearing in Finder

I’m no longer able to see devices in my Finder that I’ve connected to my MacBook Air via a USB-C multi-port adapter. I have a camera I use a USB-micro>USB-A cable to connect to the MacBook to download the images, and a thumb drive with a USB-A port for the same purpose. With either, when I’ve connected recently, there’s nothing that shows up on the Finder. If I disconnect the adapter and reconnect it, an alert box flashes on and disappears before I can read it.

I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this, and has a solution to the problem.

Many thanks,

Rob

Figured it out. I recorded the screen so that I could see and read the alert that flashed for a millisecond. It asked if I would allow the accessory to connect. I of course had no time even to read it, let alone allowing it to go through. I went to Privacy & Security, and changed "Ask for New Accessories" to "Allow When Unlocked." I would actually feel better if I were asked before I allow new accessories to connect (such as the flash drive a person gave me), but I'm essentially blocked from seeing anything when I have the system set this way.
