Transfer data from one Apple ID to another Apple ID

Hi

My son bought his sister's Mac off of her, as he was basically using it all the time anyway. He needs to transfer the data he has on his sister's Apple ID, to his Apple ID on the Mac. Has anyone got any advice?

Thanks :)

What data exactly?

There is no direct way of transferring data between Apple IDs.

He can log out of her account on the Mac and it should then ask if he wishes to keep the data on the device. Answering yes, will keep the data on the Mac and when he logs into his own Apple ID it should the be uploaded to his iCloud account. This will account for data in the following apps: contacts, notes, calendar entries, photos in the photos app, iCloud email and any synced documents from iCloud Drive.

Apps downloaded from the Mac App Store will forever be tied to the Apple ID that downloaded them, and will always require it and its password to update. No way around this except to delete the Apps and download them again with his own Apple ID.

Apple has no formal account merging or transferring process. The things below will help you in doing ongoing or one-time transfer of as much as possible from one account to the other, but some things can never be transferred (namely purchases), only shared.

You can use various iCloud sharing features for some ongoing data sharing.

Share folders with iCloud Drive --> Share files and folders in iCloud Drive on iCloud.com - Apple Support

Read How to use Shared Albums in Photos on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac - Apple Support about how to share photos.

Sharing music playlists —> How to share an Apple Music playlist on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Apps and media bought with one ID are permanently associated with that ID. Look into using Family Sharing to continue to be able to use items purchased with one Apple ID with other Apple IDs, and for some data sharing features.

- Family Sharing - What is Family Sharing? - Apple Support

- Set up Family Sharing - Set up Family Sharing - Apple Support

The next section may sound tricky but it lets you merge some things on a device where you have already signed in with an old account but want to use a new account and incorporate data that is already on the device from the old account. Incidentally, the data will then propagate to other devices using iCloud with that new ID. (I haven't tried this with a computer but it may also work with a computer account signed into an old ID.)

If you have signed into the first ID on a device then fortunately when you sign out of that ID it asks you if you wish to retain the data from the old ID on your device (toggle the ones you want to on). If you keep data on the device then when you sign in with the other ID it will merge this data with the account signing into the device. You can later delete individual items from the old ID that you do not want. Similar information can be found in this post I have 2 apple IDs i want to merge them h… - Apple Community Note that only content physically present on the device like contacts, photos and videos will be retained. Meta data such as a game play scores that are tied to a specific ID or are only on a vendor's Apple ID-specific database remotely will not be retained. Also turn off storage optimization before doing this. With Optimize Storage, smaller, space-saving photos and videos are kept on your device while all of your original, full-resolution versions are stored in iCloud. Make sure photo optimization is turned off so the full quality versions from the old account are actually on the device before merging the content into your new account. Manage your photo storage - Apple Support You can turn optimization back on again once you are fully using your new ID on the device.

Even though apps may remain on a device and may work for a while, you will not be able to update them or redownload them unless you buy them again with this ID or download them with this ID using Family Sharing.

If another Apple ID is signed in you may need to enter the password for that ID to sign out of that ID first.

Did you read the responses above? Especially where Phil0124 said "There is no direct way of transferring data between Apple IDs."

Apple does not support directly moving data from one Apple ID to another. You can read the rest of Phil's answer for more information on what you might be able to do.

Purchased content if forever tied to the Apple ID under which it was purchased.

Would that work the same from iPhone to another?

Yes. If he signs out from all the places an Apple ID is used, and signs in with his own Apple ID it should ask him if he wishes to keep any relevant data on the device. He would need to answer yes.

how would you advise we proceed?

On his device:

Go to Settings ➜ Apple ID ➜ Media & Purchases and tap on Sign Out.

Go back to Settings ➜ Apple ID, scroll to the bottom and tap on Sign Out.

Go to Settings ➜ Messages ➜ Send & Receive ➜ Apple ID, and Sign out,.

Go to Settings ➜ Facetime ➜ Apple ID and Sign out.

Then sign in with his own Apple ID.

For the Calendar and Contacts he can then add the other Apple ID that holds those items in Settings ➜ Calendar ➜ Accounts ➜ Add Account and Settings ➜ Contacts ➜ Accounts ➜ Add Account.

Photos will need to be shared through the Family Shared album.

Also, note that any Apps he downloaded with your Apple ID will continue to require it and its password for updated.

We have enabled federation. So, around 644 user conflict happens. before the federation, some of the employes used domain mail IDs and developed apps and purchased certificates etc. Now those users are not able to log in with existing apple id.

because all the data belongs to the company project.

I don't know what you mean by "enabled federation". Can you try explaining that in a different way? Or, post in your native language.

Funny how it is possible to send photos automatically to Google Photos, but not between Apple IDs, which is frankly ridiculous! This is a very common use case, which the company that brags about superior "user experience" refuses to support.

You can of course use a device to download/upload them, but that takes much time and data bandwidth/quota if you have many photos. Transfer them directly in the servers should be a no brainer.

Would that work the same from iPhone to another? For years my husband and I are sharing an appleID. It enables us to have the same calendar, Photos database, Contacts, etc. But it creates issues since only I can fully control the appleID and so for signing in etc it can be annoying.

since then we have had kids and I turned our existing appleID account I to a family account adding our two kids with their own appleIDs.

now we would like to have a separate appleID for my husband and then add him to the Family account, but without him losing all his data on his iPhone.

how would you advise we proceed?

thank you!
