does removing app on iphone free up space?

Does removing an app from the homescreen on my iphone, as opposed to deleting the app, free up space?

I had to download a back-up to my iphone and ended up with so many photos and apps that I can't even look at my emails.

So, as I try to remember which apps I am okay with getting rid of, when the phone asks me if I want to delete or just remove from homescreen; if simply removing frees up space, I will try that.
