macOS Catalina iMac (Retina 5k) 3.4 Ghz quad-core intel core i5 having trouble shutting down/turning off

Good day,

I am having alot of trouble trying to shutdown my imac. When shutting it down, the imac does its processes until a certain point (where the backdrop picture remains on the screen, but all else has disappeared.) The mouse is visible and can be moved around but nothing happens after this. I have to then hold in the power button to turn off.

I have tried restarting in Safe Mode, which does not work: The Apple logo shows as normal, but takes a lot longer to start up- and then the computer is still in normal mode. (Everything works just fine when the computer is running though)

I have tried resetting the NVRAM which also did not help. Tried resetting SMC, no help. I have run disk utility to repair disk drives: some errors were found ("directory valence check: directory (oid 0x13): nchildren (1) does not match drec count (0)) and other similar errors but these are unable to be repaired as the message was "snapshot fsroot tree corruptions are not repaired; they'll go away once the snapshot is deleted"

I am all out of ideas and any ideas will be appreciated,

Thank you so much

Giancarlo

Hello,

We need to see what all is running & machine specs, a report from this will not display any personal info...

EtreCheck is a FREE simple little diagnostic tool to display the important details of your system configuration and allow you to copy that information to the Clipboard. It is meant to be used with Apple Support Communities to help people help you with your Mac. It will not display any personal info.

Pastebin is a good place to paste the whole report if you capture the URL while there…

Workable but harder for me to work with...the Note tool on the bottom of this editor's toolbar, as shown in the image, to copy and paste the output from EtreCheck. In a Reply before you click post, look for this to add longer texts...

Uninstall CleanMyMac per their directions , then run etrecheck again to see what chaff it left...

See if you have unknown Profiles.

To remove a configuration profile in macOS:

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences....
  2. From the View menu in System Preferences, select Profiles.Note:
  3. Profiles won't be visible until you have at least one profile installed.
  4. Select the profile you want to remove, and then press the - (minus) button. Click Remove to remove the profile.

Thank you for the info once again..

I had a hard time uninstalling CleanMyMac as it would not let me uninstall itself according to the developer instructions. I used App Cleaner & Uninstaller (trial version) to remove it. I have then since shut down the computer and to my suprise it has completely shut down and turned off. I restarted again in safe mode aswell as normal mode and again shut down to be sure its working. It has turned off completely every time. I think this has solved the problem and Im very appreciative of the advise from everyone.

I have run etrecheck again as requested and posted the results if you will be interested.

Thank you all very much for the help :)
