Thanks for your response. My solution has been to export from Pages to pdf. Then, using FineReader, export the pdf to .docx. The pagination remains accurate. Then using OpenOffice, generate the index and paste in into the pages text. Not only is this a hassle, although accurate in pagination, it means that you must use the very last edit of your manuscript before generating the index. if you then do any editing, you must do the same in the .docx or else the numbering system will be off. Not a happy process. I do want to use Pages and find it superior to Word/Open Office.

These are user-to-user supported communities without product team participation, and there is simply no means for us to know about internal Apple product planning. Adding indexing to Pages introduces professional capabilities that are not within the original design goal of consumer friendly simplicity.

You could export the Pages PDF and then open that PDF in Microsoft Word 16.31 or later to have Word convert it into a .docx. I prefer LibreOffice over OpenOffice simply due to the frequency and quanta of improvements. The LibreOffice Writer has documentation (Chapter 15) that is informational about indexing.
