Sound perferences mute button wont unmute

I tried putting my volume up on my laptop but every time I do, it still shows that it is muted. I tried looking through Sound preferences and changing the sound output but it won't show me where I can change it to the Macbook's original sound output. (won't show up in output device) How do I turn off my mute button?
