TimeMachine backups in Trash

How can I get TimeMachine backups off of my hard drive

iMac 27″ 5K, macOS 13.4

FWIW, you should never try and delete Time Machine backups manually. To empty the trash, you will have to disable Time Machine, remove the external drive from Time Machine preferences, erase the drive, re-add the drive and start a new set of backups.

After making a mistake, I've spent months trying what worked with other OS even using to no effect, Terminal. Ventura has been a challenge for which dial-a-brain had an answer. I'm sure my error has cost me some data but the relief of cleaning the Trash was worth it.
