iPad 'Disabled'

About a week ago, my ancient iPad powered up, but the screen is locked up and reads:

iPad is Disabled

connect to iTunes

I logged into iTunes from my laptop, but have been unsuccessful with either online Apple Support (no response) or locating any diagnostic information that addresses either the term 'Disabled', or some sort of override combination to clear the problem.

Is it safe to assume, that I have either ran out of good fortune on this particular (previously bulletproof workhorse of a unit), or am I headed off to a local Apple Store to pay for an exorcism?

NOTE: My sole activity on this unit is to read the online New York Times and The Economist, or shop on Amazon. No wacky internet travels that would pick up cooties.

Much thanks.

You need to connect your iPad to your computer in order to get it working again. Take a look at the instructions here.
