Does a custom email domain create separate mailboxes?

If I move my custom email domain to iCloud, does that create separate mailboxes from my iCloud.com mailbox? Would I have two addresses and two separate mailboxes, like

mymail@icloud.com

mymail@mydomain.com

Or is the mymail@mydomain.com address actually just an alias in the mymail@icloud.com mailbox?

Hello Frustrated_Van,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

Using a custom domain is treated like an alias for your existing iCloud account and will be sent to the same inbox.
