5120 x 1440 on LG 49WQ95C scaling problem

Ok, this is not a question, but rather a solution that worked for me. (I tried several scaling apps from different forums, but none of them worked for me)

So I have the 13" MacBook Pro (2017, base model), and I just got a new 49" monitor (LG 49WQ95C) that has a native resolution 5120 x 1440.

Of course there were some scrambling issues when I first connected it with the attached USB-C.

For me it solved first when booting the computer in safe mode. Then I deleted all the login items, and then reboot, and now it's perfectly fine, no issues at all. Ok, maybe some thermal throttling because it is a demanding resolution for my Mac.

I hope this will help others too.

So, after 3 weeks, suddenly the issue occured again. The MacBook freezes and shuts down, after the reboot, it is the same problem again. It seems like the Ventura has some serious bugs in connection with external display scaling. (My MacBook Pro 2017 is running on macOS Ventura 13.4.1 (22F82))

Read this on a forum which solved the problem for me:

  1. Disconnect external monitor
  2. Run the command in the terminal: sudo sleep 20; sudo kill -9 $(pgrep WindowServer)
  3. Enter the admin user password and press enter
  4. Connect external monitor before 20 seconds had passed
  5. After 20 seconds, you will need to log in to macOS again, but this time your monitor should work
