iPhone battery drain

My iPhone 12 mini

  • iOS 16.5 (installed >2 weeks)
  • Excessive & massive battery drain from Mail app running in background for 8-10 hours a day.
  • Mail app use on average: once (short) every 3-4 days
  • Two e-mail accounts & iCloud (iCloud Drive, Contacts and 7 more according to Settings->Mail->Accounts)
  • Push: off
  • Fetch New Data: off.
  • All options: Low Power

I deleted both e-mail accounts. The battery drain was reduced substantially. With moderate iPhone use (mostly Wi-Fi internet, 1-2 short calls a day), battery charging demand was reduced to once every 24 hours.

The Mail app is still running in the background for 8-10 hours a day. Is there any way of reducing this? Does iCloud need to be constantly running in the background?

And, I need to configure my e-mail accounts again, but am not willing to charge my phone twice a day.

Is there a solution?

Hello matias_rg,

We would like to see how we can help you with your iPhone and the Mail app. Just to confirm, have you had a chance to restart the iPad recently? Have you force closed the Mail app? Follow the steps in this link to force close an app: Close an app on your iPhone or iPod touch - Apple Support

"iPhone X and later

  1. From the Home Screen, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause in the middle of the screen.
  2. Swipe right or left to find the app that you want to close.
  3. Swipe up on the app's preview to close the app. "

Get back to us with these details so that we have a better understanding of the issue, and we can go from there.

Cheers!

Hello Sean_B1,

I really hope you can help.

My iPhone is regularly force-restarted once a week.

All apps I do not use are always force-closed.

Aside from the battery drain and the hours long background activity of the Mail app (screenshot), something weird is happening with the Mail app.

Although I closed my two e-mail accounts on my iPhone but left my iCloud account active (please see screenshots), the screen "ACCOUNTS" indicates iCloud is active. When I open the Mail app (screenshot) and tip on iCloud, a new screen opens and asks me to input my e-mail address, as if the account weren't active. Which it is according to the screenshot. What the heck is happening?

I sincerely hope you can guide me through this.

Thanks,

Matias

Hello matias_rg,

If the Mail app is continuing to use battery power when you're not using the app, try removing and reinstalling it.

1. Touch and hold the app.
2. Tap Remove App Remove App icon.

Delete apps on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Once it's removed, just go into the App Store and search for "Mail" to redownload the app. Once it has finished reinstalling, test out the device and see if the app continues to use significant battery power when you're not using it.

If it is still using battery power when not in use, you'll want to contact Apple to report the issue: Get Support

Cheers!

Hello green500,

I deleted the Mail app and installed it again.

When I open the app it says:

Account Restriction

This iPhone is restricted from

creating mail accounts

Also, under Settings -> FaceTime the word FaceTime is highlighted in gray, not black, and can not be accessed.

Please let me know what I have done wrong, so I can fix it.

Thanks.

green500,

That could be related to restrictions. Make sure there aren't any on your iPhone and to turn them off and see if the ability to create them is allowed: Use parental controls on your child's iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support

If you still have issues or can't create your email accounts again, reach out to Apple directly as they would be in a better position to look into this further with you: Get Support
