Restore Time Machine Backup to new Mac

I have ordered a new Mac and am trading in a current one. It looks like I will be required to send in my old Mac before I receive my new one. Time machine is stored and updated to an external drive. Can I restore the time machine backup to my new Mac and get everything that was on my old computer loaded and useable on my new Mac?

Yes you can Migrate from your Time Machine backup during the setup.

However, I would not erase and send off the old Mac until I made sure that the migration was successful.

Another safe option, is to make a second backup on a second external drive using CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper before erasing and sending off the old Mac.
