Hello, I have a mac mini late 2014 model on os x el capitan 10.11.6 and an iphone 11. I also keep a backup hard drive. I recently checked software update and nothing comes up at all. Is there a way to update my computer and my phone? Thank you.

The 2014 Mac Mini can run up to macOS 12 Monterey.

If you have installed any third party AV-ware, Cleaning-ware, Optimizing-ware or use a VPN, then those can block your Mac from updating normally.
If that is the case, then try updating in Safe Mode.

Thanks to both of you. It just wont download. Looks like it's going to and the little line with blue progress bar says calculating but never moves. Now that I tried it I recall this is why I gave up years ago. also wondering if I do phone will it no longer sync with mini?

If you upgrade your Mac to Catalina or later, you'll find that iTunes no longer runs.
Instead, you'll use Music to access music; TV to access movies and TV shows; and the Finder to synchronize content (such as music from your own CDs) between your Mac and your iPhone.
