Charged for Family members purchases

I purchased apple one Family. I share this with my wife and son who lives across the country from us. He just purchased something and I was charged for it. How can I share what I purchased and not pay for his purchases? Why was this allowed in the first place without getting my direct permission?

When you use Family Sharing, the family organizer agrees to pay for purchases and must have a valid credit/debit card on file. If your son is an adult, your permission isn’t needed when he makes a purchase because you already agreed to pay for his purchase when you set up family sharing.

If you want him to pay for his own purchases, have him redeem Apple Gift Cards. He can use the funds in his account and your card will not be charged.

Wow I wasn’t expecting that! What an entitlement way to make a simple thing complicated. Akin to buying an adult family member a gift (car, golf clubs, computer) then the buyer being expected by the seller to pay for everything the recipient may want there after.

Seems to me the person sharing should be able to determine the level of sharing! Should not be all or nothing.

thanks for the help. Maybe it should be clearer in the initial sign up.
