Why do I have two layers of the same element in my timeline? When I select one, the other is automatically selected.

Here is a screenshot illustrating the situation. The audio is shown in its separate lane, so each clip containing video and audio appears "duplicated"



After clicking "Hide Audio Lanes", video and audio no longer show separately:

Your screnshot does not let us see where exactly things are. It is too much of a closeup, so to speak.

In particular it does not let us know where the primary storyline is.



But after messing around in FCP to try and reproduce your situation, I succeeded 😎


Open the Timeline Index (Command-Shift-2)

Select "Roles"

Click "Hide Audio Lanes".


Done.
