Cast Youtube App Videos and Browser Videos from iPad

I have a Chinese senior using a fairly new iPad Pro to search for Chinese videos to cast on TV. The tablet has a Chinese language keyboard that allows him/her to type in Chinese characters to look for Chinese content. Smart TVs these days can't do this. A tablet is necessary to type in Chinese.

I am trying to figure out if AppleTV is my solution. I would like the ability to cast Chinese videos to TV that is searched by an iPad tablet. I already own a Chromecast pro 4k, but browser videos cannot be casted from iPad.

1) Cast Chinese videos from the Youtube app to TV. Can AppleTV do this from the iPad?

2) Cast video from various Chinese webpages to TV. Can AppleTV cast browser tabs and stop playing on the tablet once the video is maximized? Can AppleTV put cast buttons at the bottom of videos in Safari? It does this for certain videos in Chrome (from laptop) but not with the iPad.

Please let me know if AppleTV device is what I am looking for. Maybe I can't cast web browser videos because I am not using an Apple casting device.

I also read that AppleTV cannot cast from Netflix. Luckily, there isn't much Chinese content on Netflix.

I bet I would get the web browser casting if I moved from iPad to an Android tablet.

Hello winston_dang,

If you purchase an Apple TV, you can always use Screen Mirroring to display the content of the iPad on the Apple TV screen. The content will not minimize on the iPad display, as the iPad will be the remote/controller.

Some apps do support AirPlay, which will display the content from the iPad to the Apple TV. You can learn about AirPlay here - AirPlay - Apple.

I cannot speak to Youtube supporting AirPlay as I don't use Youtube, but whatever AirPlay doesn't support Screen Mirroring will resolve in my opinion.

I cannot speak for Netflix either as I don't use that as well. As I stated above though, the Netflix iPad app may have AirPlay support and if it doesn't, you can use Screen Mirroring.

I hope this helps!

1) The first time it will show a four digit passcode on the screen. After that it will not ask you for a passcode.

2) It would play on both devices. Whatever is currently showing on the iPad will mirror to the TV the Apple TV is plugged into.

2b) I don't think you'd get remote features on the iPad when screen mirroring a video. There could be some accessibility features that allow for this but I'm not familiar with it.

Long story short with Screen Mirroring, whatever is displayed on the iPad will also be displayed on the TV the Apple TV is plugged into. The content is mirrored so exiting the video or going into split screen would show these actions.

AirPlay wouldn't, but obviously as stated, Netflix no longer supports AirPlay. Youtube could, but I'm not sure.

Well, at least you can tell me about screen mirroring.

1) Does it always ask you for a password every time you connect to screen mirroring?

2) When you play a video under screen mirroring does the video play on both TV and iPad?

a. When the video is not full screen, I would assume it would continue mirroring by showing both video portion and the ipad background portion.

b. What happens when the video is full screen under mirroring? Does it give a grey background on the ipad with video controls (as a remote) but continue playing on the TV? This would allow you to minimize the casted video and use other apps.

Thank you for the info. I would like to know if AppleTV does what I want it to do before buying. I will only be using Airplay with iPad.

From the CNET video below, it appears Youtube videos can be mirrored. The iPad would stop playing and cast the video from the Youtube app. The ipad would only display video controls to control the TV.

(2:58 - opening youtube while mirroring). Screen mirroring ends and turns into cast-mode.

I actually would like to know what would happen if:

1) I start Screen Mirroring on my iPad

2) Open the Safari app or Chrome app

3) Browse to a webpage with a video embedded in it

4) Start the embedded video on the webpage and press on the maximize or full-screen button. Hopefully it would turn into cast mode. The iPad would stop playing the video but have video controls to control the TV. It would resume mirroring if the video was no longer full-screen.

The information I am looking for is hard to find. I can only post and ask.
