How to name a cell on spreadsheet Apple Numbers 13.1 on my iMac?

I am a user of the spreadsheet Apple Numbers 13.1 on my iMac

I want to assign names to certain cells in the spreadsheet. These names will have to be used in formulas in other places in the same spreadsheet.

How can I assign a name to a cell.

Every column that has a Header Row and every row that has a Header Column is similar to a named range in Numbers.

For example:

For this screenshot I turned on 'Use header names as labels' in Numbers > Settings.

But you can turn that setting off and still enter in the formula editor Price * Quantity, though the formula will then be displayed as B×C.

Hi Joost,

sorry but this feature is currently not available in Apple Numbers.

Please understand that Apple Numbers is not a Microsoft Excel clone, therefore you will not find every option in each package.

Both packages have their strong / weak points, you must check what you need and then pick one of them.

Hi Joost,

In a sense, every cell in a Numbers document has a name, or should I say, an address.

For example, a cell's address could be Sheet 1::Table 1::A2

It is already named!

Let Numbers do the work for you. Instead of typing the full address of a cell, type = in a cell where you want a formula, navigate to the source cell and click.

Why is it that every question that points out a deficiency in an Apple product gets the standard response: “You don’t need to do that” or “Not a problem for me” or “Well, maybe this Apple product wasn’t the right choice for you” or something else that dismisses the original problem?

The fact is that naming a cell has proven itself a valuable feature over 30 years or so. Apple gets money for its products. Apple should add the feature to the product. Period.

Apple should add the feature.

We're your fellow users here, trying to help other users take advantage of the impressive features in Numbers as it currently exists.

Many of us have used Numbers for years and find that its design, quite different from other spreadsheet software, doesn't really need the feature you want if you use it as it is designed, not as if it were Excel or some other software.

However, you can always give feedback to Apple via Numbers > Provide Numbers feedback in your menu. You likely will not get a response, but judging from the evolution of the product over the years the feedback is collected and prioritized.

  • How has this discussion "dismissed the original problem"?
  • "Apple gets money for its products." Yes, I bought Numbers'09 in December 2012. It cost me $19.99 (Golly gosh!) and I was delighted. Every update since then has been free.
  • "Apple should add the feature." It is clear that Apple did not try to create Numbers as an Excel clone. An Excel Sheet (Tab) is an "ocean" of cells with several "islands" of data dotted here and there. No wonder there is a need to name those islands. A Numbers sheet is a canvas that can hold several small (named) tables, each with a purpose.
  • "Well, maybe this Apple product wasn’t the right choice for you." Indeed, wise words. Use the tool that suits the job.

Ian.
