ipad or macbook security

I’ll soon be replacing an old MacBook Pro. I’m considering the MacBook Air or the iPad Pro. A friend mentioned that a iPad Pro, may not only be able to serve as a MacBook replacement (pending workflow), but it may also be somewhat more secure since it is a “closed system” and cannot be taken control of by a hacker. Is an iPad more secure than a MacBook and therefore less likely to get malware or hacked?

In addition, with an iPad you can use cellular, so all communication is encrypted. Is using cellular to access the internet more secure than Ethernet and wifi? I assume Ethernet is more secure than wifi. Also, can an Apple device be run on cellular data only - ever for updates, iCloud, etc?

I’d be interested in your comments. Thanks!

Hello MacCom1,

As someone working in the security field, no device is immune to hackers or attacks. Both devices are secure and depending on how you use them and the settings you enabled, disable, or don't even touch, this can compromise your security or raise it (If that makes sense). In other words, although both devices are secure there are always steps you can take (settings-wise) to make them more secure. Your day-to-day habits also affect the security of the underlying system. In fact, most breaches are caused by the user and not the system (typically phishing and other related attacks). Cellular and Wi-Fi attacks are harder to pull off, but not impossible.

To wrap that up, either or will work it just depends on your workflow and your needs. There are settings you can setup to make the device more secure and less secure. Your day-to-day habits also affect the security of the system.

I hope this helps!
